So why get acupuncture and work with me?

Because I wholeheartedly believe in the medicine that I practice. I’ve seen the magic that can happen, even if you don’t believe in it (read my story in Meet Jen), and I believe in miracles for you too. I have never had a patient who has committed to the six treatments not see any benefit in receiving acupuncture. If you try it, I know you’ll be hooked, because things really start to shift. Possibility awakens. Crazy stuff that you can’t even imagine opens up in your life. The you you were always meant to be emerges…and that’s the stuff that really makes me thank God each and every day that I get to do this work with people like you and be witness to that process. I get to give people hope, and there’s nothing more nurturing to the soul than that.

I truly care about my patients, and I think about them even when I’m not in the treatment room. I have been put on this planet to serve humanity, to be a leader, to teach, and to help as many people rise up and choose a life of love and compassion as possible. Your physical or mental symptoms that bring you through my door are just a nuisance that we have to get rid of so that we can focus on what you’re really here to do in this lifetime. So don’t leave me just as it’s getting good. Something deep inside you longs to express itself if you’re reading this. You were attracted to me and this page because I can help you become who you’ve always wanted to be on the outside (because you’ve always been a beautiful spirit on the inside; life just shut you down). My gift is that I can see that beauty, that endpoint, and I help my patients achieve it, so there is no difference between who you truly are and how you “be” in the world. I can’t wait to help you shine.

FAQs

Will it hurt?

Acupuncture needles are very thin- about the width of 1-2 hairs on your head- and so often patients do not feel anything. Sometimes there is little pinch, but any discomfort should go away after a moment.

How much does it cost?

I am in-network with Aetna, and most PPO plans for other insurances will also cover acupuncture services in Maryland. If you have a condition and plan that is covered by these insurance companies, you may only be responsible for a co-pay, co-insurance, deductible, or percentage of the treatment costs. If your plan with any insurance company includes coverage for out-of-network providers, you may also be eligible for reduced treatment costs. I am happy to check on your coverage, and submit any bills for payment to the insurance companies on your behalf.

If you do not have coverage, the cash payments at time of service are as follows:

New Patient Intake & Initial Acupuncture Treatment: $150

1.5 hours

The first session is more extensive than the follow-up treatments. During this time, I go over your full medical and social history, and complete several diagnostic tests in order to determine your baseline state. You will also receive a needle treatment. You receive focused one-on-one time with me, and are able to express your health concerns in a private and confidential manner.

Follow-up Acupuncture Treatment: $90

45-60 mins

During your follow-up acupuncture treatments, we will spend one-on-one time chatting about your progress and any concerns that have arisen since the last treatment. I may perform additional diagnostic tests, and you will receive a needle treatment.

Do you take insurance?

I am in-network with Aetna, and most PPO plans will also cover acupuncture services in Maryland.

Acupuncture is an allowed expense under an HSA plan, and I accept payment by benefit card (if cards have VISA, MC, AMEX, or Discover logos). Additionally, any payments for acupuncture are also an allowable deduction on your personal taxes as an itemized medical expense (see IRS rules regarding amounts).

How many sessions will it take and how often do I need to come in?

It depends on how long you have had the symptom, as well as several other factors, but most people will see some effect within 6-8 treatments. If there is absolutely no shift in any of your symptoms in that period of time, it may be that acupuncture is not the best modality for you.

It is ideal to come in twice a week for the first 3-4 weeks until symptoms improve; however, you may come in once a week for 6-8 weeks if it works better for your schedule and/or budget. It is not recommended to space treatments out further than one week in the first several weeks, as acupuncture treatments build on one another and have a cumulative effect. If you go too long between treatments, you can end up backtracking and taking longer to see the effects you are looking for.

As your symptoms improve, we are able to space your treatments further apart, until ultimately you are only coming in 4-5 times a year for seasonal maintenance (highly recommended). Some people choose to stop treatment after they experience relief from the primary complaint they have, and that is fine, and you’ll likely find that acupuncture is able to help you with your secondary health concerns as well, and help support you as you pursue your passions in this life. I personally have been receiving acupuncture treatment since 2005, and because I lead an active life where I am balancing many passions and truly living life boldly, I continue to see my acupuncturist every 2-3 weeks for the support I need. I have some patients who choose, like me, to stay coming in more frequently, and others who decide they need less support. Wherever you fall on the spectrum, I am happy to play a part in your wellness journey.

Who is NOT a good fit for acupuncture?

While acupuncture can help with almost everything, the following are people who are not a good fit for acupuncture with me:

  • people who have a past or current history of drug and/or alcohol addiction. Though acupuncture can be very helpful with recovery, I do not work with these populations. I’m happy to recommend you to other acupuncturists I know who do.
  • patients who have a known mental health diagnosis who are not currently in treatment with a mental health professional. I only treat patients who have less severe mental health concerns, and still only if the patient is under the care of a mental health therapist. I do not treat patients who have been diagnosed with schizophrenia and/or schizoaffective disorders, or other conditions where a person’s reality is distorted.
  • someone who is not willing to fully commit to treatment, coming in as recommended and doing any “homework” or taking suggestions seriously. You won’t see the results you are looking for, or at least not as quickly, unless you are willing to do your part and be consistent.
  • someone who has a physical symptom that involves abnormal formation or healing of organs or bones. Acupuncture is good for many things, but it’s not likely going to magically seal a hole in your heart or grow fingers or anything like that. It’s a different kind of magic.
  • infants and young children. I personally don’t work with these populations, but I’m super happy to recommend you to other acupuncturists I know who do.
  • new patients who are currently pregnant. While acupuncture is generally safe during pregnancy, if I have not seen you as a patient prior to your pregnancy, I do not have a good baseline for what your “normal” is, and you may also be more sensitive to the needles than when you are not pregnant. This can lead to increased risk for you and the baby. I like to make sure you all are safe, so I am more than happy to treat you post-delivery and help you recover, but I choose not to treat new patients who are pregnant. I am happy to recommend you to acupuncturists who treat new pregnant patients.
How does acupuncture work?

No one knows with absolute certainty, but there are a couple different theories. One theory is that it works by stimulating the nerve endings. Another theory is that there is a light system in the body that was discovered recently, and that perhaps acupuncture works via that network. Yet another is that it works by stimulating pools of electrical energy at each acupuncture point, which travel much like an action potential in a neuronal network along the acupuncture channels, or “meridians.” However it works, it can be truly magical! Ultimately I think it doesn’t matter if it works via one of the theories mentioned, or if it’s purely a placebo effect… if it works, who cares?!?
