During the summertime, I’ll splurge every now and then on having grilled bratwurst on a gluten free bun, heaping with sauerkraut. I’d never had bratwurst until I met my husband; his family has strong German roots and his father spent time living in Germany when he was younger, so they all enjoy consuming various types of “wursts” and sausages. I did grow up with sauerkraut however, and used to even eat it out of the can when I was a kid. My husband thinks that is gross, because his family grew up eating sauerkraut cooked with apples and sausage, and it was a warm dish (they still have this dish on the holidays). Whatever, I still prefer plain sauerkraut and won’t hesitate to eat it out of the bag. But I do appreciate the combo of brats and sauerkraut that they introduced me to, and this dish, if you even want to call it a dish, is just my excuse to eat lots of sauerkraut while still celebrating the awesomeness that is a good grilled bratwurst. Because sausages are a little fattier of a meat, you don’t want to eat this dish too often, but it’s yummy on a cool fall day, or even on a warm summer day if you don’t want to mess with the gluten free bun. Pass the hard apple cider and I’m one happy girl!

P.S. My mom used to make something similar to this but with summer sausage instead, so you certainly can substitute another sausage in the place of the bratwurst; I just prefer bratwurst!

Grilled Bratwurst and Sauerkraut

Prep Time: 0 mins
Cook Time: 15 mins
Serves 4

1 package gluten-free uncooked bratwurst (4 links)
24 oz sauerkraut

Grill brats 7-8 mins per side until cooked through; adjusting cooking times if you have thinner or thicker brats. If desired, warm sauerkraut in the microwave for about 2 mins or in a pan for a few minutes. To serve, either slice the brats and place on a pile of sauerkraut, or place 1 bratwurst per dish with the sauerkraut on the side.
